Dedication

This book is and is not about my family: my father, Ed Spence; Mother Dorothy Spence; Sister Lynda Allen; Brother Stephen Spence; and Brother Stewart Spence.

Growing up in the ‘50s and ‘60s, we were at various times happy, quarrelsome, confused, and inspired by the world confronting us. But we were always boisterous and managed to find our ways back to love and laughter.

Mum and Dad are no longer with us, so what had been a loose hierarchy is now a sort of loose confederacy.

When I say this book is and is not about my family, I mean some of the scenes will resonate like memory for my sister and brothers because they are based on my own experiences. But this is really a human story about a fictional family—its generations, successes, and setbacks struggling to adapt to an imperfect, sometimes hazardous world.

And in that sense, it’s a perspective that includes the people who had the greatest influence on my own formative years and who remain at the very heart of the person I’ve become.

With Love,
Craig Spence
